We decided to leave Christchurch a day earlier than planned, because 1) we really saw a lot the first day, and 2) frankly, of all the places to visit in such a beautiful country - it was a depressing, tough place to start.
So off we headed to the Queen Charlotte Sound. And on the way, we stopped for a great breath of sunshine and fresh air in Kaikura. And a 90 minute walk that took us past seals (a whole colony- basking in the sun) and sea birds and death-defying cliff climbs. The perfect antidote to urban destruction.
Fun tidbit: In Kaikura we saw THE BEST homemade camper. Ever. I mean it. Look at the pictures. Zoom in for detail. Seriously ingenious.
I would definitely prefer this view to the earthquake damage in a city!
